Friday Five

1. Happy Day After Valentine's Day, or as I like to call it, Crashing from the Sugar High Day!

2. I've been riding the revisions roller coaster this week, although this round has been more filled with highs than lows. (This comparison doesn't really work for people like me, who hate roller coasters. I'd rather be on a low point than at the top of a drop. I think I need a new metaphor.)

3. What I've been reading: finishing up an adult mystery novel with a precocious, 11-year-old narrator. I always find it interesting to read books with young protagonists that aren't categorized as kid lit and figure out why. In this case, I think it comes down partly to voice--while I adore the voice in this book, it feels less authentic/more stylized than most MG.

4. What I've been watching: my reward for hard work on revisions has been Downton Abbey. I finished up Season 2 on Wednesday and this weekend I'm planning on catching up with Season 3. I would like Maggie Smith to become my benefactor.

5. Three beautiful words: Three-Day Weekend. A whole extra day to revise, run, relax. What are your plans?

YES to #3 - I just finished an adult book with a 14-yr-old protag and the "looking back" makes her way more insightful and lyrical than if the book was "in the now."

What were you reading? Mine was The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie.
(Yes, I picked it because I thought pies would be involved.)

Good luck on revisions! I'm reading THE PECULIAR by Stefan Bachmann (an MG fantasy/steampunk). Quite liking the writing. Reminds me of Neil Gaiman. I am also reading UNRAVEL ME by Tahereh Mafi (sequel to SHATTER ME). Obsessed!!! Next in my queue is IN THE WOODS by Tara French, adult mystery that takes the main character back to a mystery never solved n his childhood... should be good. :D

Good luck with those revisions... I'm sure you're rocking them! I'm glad you mentioned the title of the book you're reading in the comments because I was curious. Definitely sounds like one to check out. Have a great weekend, Rebecca!

My plan for the weekend involves a whole lot of reading and lounging around drinking Red Velvet Cake tea from David's Tea. Once I'm finished JUST ONE DAY, I'll probably move on to UNRAVEL ME(!)

Good luck with your revisions. I hope you have a great weekend! :)

Yeah, I'm always curious how novels with young protags become classified as literary fiction instead of MG or YA--I've always thought it had something to do with which audience the material would resonate more with.

Anyway, good luck in revising! :)

I have a four day weekend since schools are on midwinter break, so I've been spending all day today rereading Sense and Sensibility and watching Downton. (I'm ALMOST finished with Season 2 - only two episodes left!)

I hope you get a lot of revising done :)

Yes to Downton! Starting Season 3 tonight. :)

I thought you might be talking about The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie! I hear what you're saying. I was also struck by how harsh the sisters were to each other. I thought it was believable and authentic (depending on the family) but I could easily imagine it not fitting as MG per se. What I love about that story was in his late 60s when he published this book. Very cool and inspiring.

Yay for revisions! I think I agree with you on the whole roller coaster thing. While I like them, I like the safe parts. :)
