Friday Five: Scary Edition

1. Scary weather. Snor'eastercane: a word that should not have to be in our vocabulary. Neither should be Snowicane or Frankenstorm (although I love that the National Weather Service discussed Mary Shelley in their announcement). I'm relatively (6 years) new to the East Coast, but this will be my second NYC hurricane. That's not normal, right?

2. Scary movies.
The older I get, the less I can watch them. At this point, I think about the most frightening I can go is Hocus Pocus (which is only scary in terms of how old it makes me feel!) or the Halloween episode of Modern Family (which I found frightening this year, at least the last 5-10 minutes). Sidenote: Check out this Hocus Pocus cake. Anyway, I'm pretty that if I tried to watch Paranormal Activity, I would never ever ever sleep again. And I like to sleep, so that's why I stick to the ABC Family version of scary.

3. Scary snacks. I need to find some to make for my work Halloween party. I won the award for spookiest snack last year for my Spicy Cheddar Witch Fingers. Yes, they look disgusting but they were actually very tasty. Any suggestions for me to try this year?

Ew + Yum

4. Scary stories. I'm reading Nikki Loftin's The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy. It's so good! It's so deliciously creepy!

5.
Um, I couldn't think of a fifth scary thing. But I do want to mention that Monday is YA Book Club day, so I will be posting about Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven Boys. For more on the book club, check out Tracey Neithercott's blog.

Happy pre-Halloween weekend!

As someone who has been an East Coaster their whole life...these storms are NOT usual. Especially this one.Hurricane season is OVER for us. *shudders* I am praying its all hype and nothing serious but who knows at this point. I'm off to buy water and ducttape and a flashlight today.

Yeah, it's sorta sad how giddy the weather people are with their nicknames.

One of my brothers acted like Paranormal Activity was a snoozefest, but I'm with you - I can't even watch the trailers or previews for these movies without feeling a little freaked out.

Good luck witn Sandy--and if I learned anything from Irene, you'll want to get some D batteries now! Irene was my favorite kind of natural disaster--one I got to prepare for but which caused very little harm (well, in our region. It was pretty rough on central NY and New England. ). But the sense of community--everyone was out stocking up--was nice. We had some nice interactions with our neighbors. Here's hoping Sandy doesn't get much worse than that.

Ironically, I had to leave NYC right before Hurricane Irene for a wedding in PA. Then I couldn't get back to the city because of the flooding in PA and NJ, and the fact that all the buses/trains stopped running--it was a nightmare!
I was kind of sad to miss the city coming together during the storm.

I love the term 'Frankenstorm', though it sucks that you guys have to deal with it. Stay safe!

As for scary movies, I'm so not a fan. Speaking of Paranormal Activity, did you hear about that theatre in the UK that showed the first 5 minutes of the latest Paranormal Activity movie to a room full of young kids waiting to see Madagascar 3? It was an accident, but apparently the kids were running from the theatre screaming. Those poor, poor children! I have been getting the urge to watch Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic pre-Halloween, though. But I'd hardly call those overly scary. :)

This Frankenstorm is freaking me out a little too, but I'm in VA and I don't think it's supposed to get us as hard... stay safe!

And I used to tolerate scary a lot better, too. I went through a long period of ABC Family scary (Hocus Pocus is my jam--amok! amok! amok!), but lately I've had a resurgent love for slashers and zombies. I think it's The Walking Dead's fault... :) I do NOT do Paranormal Activity or Saw or any of that though, haha...

@Jaime: That is horrible! Those poor kids. :(
I don't know that I ever saw Practical Magic--maybe a good movie to watch while it's gross and scary outside this weekend!

@Crystal: You stay safe, too! Who knows where this thing is hitting. I do love THE WALKING DEAD, too. I find it more gross than scary--not sure why. Zombies don't freak me out nearly as much as sinister things like evil ghosts, psychos, etc. Maybe it's the lack of intent?
