It's been too long, RTWers! It's nice to be back on the highway.
Maybe it's because I've spent a lot of this summer outside, but my soundtrack has largely been birds and bugs and breezes. And booms, because I live next door to a construction site. (Always. No matter where I move, municipal projects will find me.)
I did see Sigur Rós at Prospect Park last week, and it was an awesome show.
I loved them as a kid, and I love them now. Sure, some songs are light and cheesy ("Fun, Fun, Fun" and "California Girls" come to mind.) But do not underestimate Brian Wilson's musical genius. Pet Sounds is an American classic, and there is real depth to songs like "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times," "'Til I Die," and "God Only Knows."
Don't believe me? Listen to Slate's curated Spotify playlist here.
This topic reminds me that as I do the prep work for a fall first draft, I should make some new writing playlists.
What have you been listening to?

"Pet Sounds" was certainly an innovative album. I agree, Brian Wilson had a very creative imagination. And you can't think of summer music without thinking of The Beach Boys, right? :)
I love The Beach Boys :D and will need to check Sigur Rós! Glad to have you back on the Highway!
Spotify needs to hurry up and launch in Canada-land! Beach Boys are a great summer music choice!
For summer I keep turning to Katy Perry a lot. I don't know why but her songs always feel like summer. Anything I can dance to really. I guess summer is the time where I really want to and have enough free time to go out for a night and dance. I'm a hermit in winter and during term time I'm working and too tired.
And Summer of 69 is always on repeat. My favourite summer song.
hee, you and i are on the same wavelength this week. i got to perform "i just wasn't made for these times" at a pet sounds tribute show last weekend. it was kind of amazing.
Saw the show in Prospect Park as well. Love summer close to the park. Am I a showing too much borough pride if I think Prospect Park is better than Central-- cause I do.
The Beach Boys always make me think of this summer family reunion I went to when I was a kid. One of my distant cousins and I became summer BFFs and recorded one of those karaoke tapes (yes, cassette tapes) singing Surfin' USA. I wish I still had it, it was hilarious.
@Rebekah: Wasn't it a great show? I have to respectfully disagree on park preference, though--I'm a Manhattanite and pretty loyal to Central Park. :) Prospect Park is great, though!
You can't go wrong with a bit of Beach Boys ^_^
I love love love 'Good Vibrations'. You're right -- while the Beach Boys had their poppy tunes, they have some amazing tunes that have stood the test of time.
Thanks for dropping by my blog! I am now following you.
Oh, it has been a while since I listened to The Beach Boys, and now I feel like giving it a go again. hehe
Thanks for sharing!
Already by name the Beach Boys are perfect for summer. I hadn't hear some of their more 'deeper' songs, thanks for pointing it out!
My summer playlist has been very relaxed, with one favorite song whose lyrics were penned by a YA author :)
Big confession: I've never been a Beach Boys fans. Except for the T-bird song. :) Though, I do have to agree with everyone here--the Beach Boys are definitely summer music!
I know a couple that got engaged at a Sigur Ros concert this summer! They make some truly fantastic writing music.
Awww Pet Sounds! Such a classic album. So perfect for summer!
Glad to have you back :)
I love The Beach Boys - GREAT summer music. :) Also, new draft? Awesome! A shiny new ms is always exciting!
I've been listening to a lot of top forty - exercising music. Trying to get in as much as I can before school starts. :/
I...have never listened to the Beach Boys. *runs off to listen to playlist*
