Recommendations Needed

I have a lot of flights coming up, folks. Flights I'm really looking forward to for the trip/event that they are related to--but I'm absolutely not looking forward to being in the air. I hates it.

A while back we established that I can fly comfortably with Bossypants in my hands (see here) but I don't think I can read only Bossypants for the approximately 27* total hours (throughout the trip) I will be in flight. Despite my Tina Fey fandom.

So, dear blog friends: it's time for recommendations! What books do you suggest I pack to take my mind off the fact that I am hurtling through air at 38,000 feet in a cylinder full of fuel? (Or what are your vacation reading suggestions in general)?

*Twenty-seven hours. What. The hell. Have I gotten myself into?

I'm currently reading "Legend" by Marie Lu and it's entertaining, but not sure a book about plagues and conspiracies is what you need while in the air :)

Paranormalcy and Supernaturally by Kiersten White and Shade and Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready for YA paranormal goodness. Oh, also (and always) the Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelley Armstrong; first book is The Summoning and I recommend you bring along *at least* the second one in addition. And any Sophie Hannah psychological thriller-- my favourites are Hurting Distance, Lasting Damage, and The Other Half Lives.

Yikes! I do not envy you all that flying. If you're in the mood for historical, try GILT by Katherine Longshore or CODE NAME VERITY by Elizabeth Wein. They're VERY different--Gilt is about the court of Henry VIII, and is full of gossip and romance and intrigue and death, while CNV is set during WWII and focuses on a friendship between two young women in the military. (Although I guess CNV also has its share of romance, intrigue, and death.). If you're averse to crying in public, maybe save CNV, but It is a good book to read in long uninterrupted stretches.

If you're up for fantasy, try THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS by Rae Carson or SHADOW AND BONE by Leigh Bardugo. Two great, complicated protagonists.

I could go on and on and on...but I'll spare you. I will say that I've read a stretch of really great books in the last few weeks, so scrolling through the past few Sunday review posts over at my blog might turn up more you'd like.

27 hours is a lot of time in the sky, but think of all of the free [paritally edible] food! I used to get nervous about flying all the time, but then I did some research into the physics of flight and what causes turbulence, etc., and it really helped allay some of my fears.

As for book recs, not sure what you've read, but maybe the Summer series by Jenny Han, the Jessica Darling series by Megan McCafferty, or Audrey Wait by Robin Benway?

I just started Melissa Walker's UNBREAK MY HEART. So far, so great. Great summer read about a 16 yo who has to spend the summer on her family's boat while she gets over a broken heart/broken friendship.

I once flew ALMOST that much (22 hours to Australia! <3 Oh gosh now I miss that flight/trip so much....), but since I can't read on a plane I don't know what to suggest. I ended up watching a movie. I also second Crystal's suggestion of the Jessica Darling series - there are 5 books and it is funny and talks about NJ and NYC and spans from Jessica's sophomore year in high school until she is 25. (contemporary)

I've GILT is also very good and similar to Philippa Gregory if you're into historical.

I've heard wonderful things about SHADOW AND BONE (fantasy), THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS and Meg Cabot's ABANDON if you're into more fantastical. I don't know if you picked up THRONE OF GLASS while at BEA but that one is great too! Well written and good pacing. :)

Best of luck on your flying journey and good luck picking a book (you must tell us what you ended up reading!)

For a fun nonfiction book, I recommend Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential (the audio book version is particularly great, because he reads it!). If you haven't read the Jessica Darling series by Megan McCafferty, there's 5 straight books of hilarious un-put-downable-ness (yes, I made that word up). I read three of them on the way to Scotland and back about 5 years ago.

27 hours!!?? Wow! You'll definitely need some reading material ;)

Some books I'd recommend:
FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK by Melina Marchetta
THE PROBABILITY OF MIRACLES by Wendy Wunder
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE + A MILLION SUNS by Beth Revis
SPLIT by Swati Avasthi (well, maybe not - unless you don't mind getting all emotional on a flight)

That is an incredibly long flight! If I was looking for something to take my mind off of things, but wasn't seriously heavy reading, I'd bring along ANNA & LOLA. Nothing like a little bit of swoon to make you smile and take your mind off of things. :)

P.S. Have a great time!

Like Jaime, ANNA would probably make my list :D Otherwise, JELLICOE ROAD, THE GIRLS OF NO RETURN (it´s very different and I am not a 100% in love with the book but the story is so compelling and the writing very good...it would take your mind off the plane for sure :D), The Statistical Probability of Love At First Sight (well because of the plane situation :D)

If you want non-fiction books, my husband apparently loved THE PSYCHOPATH TEST and STEVE JOBS biography (even though he has something against Apple :D) and other ones...

Thanks for all of these wonderful recommendations! And to clarify: 27 total hours flying throughout the trip, not at once! I don't know if I could do that. :)

Oh and I meant to say (I was too fast); the hubby may have other non-fiction recommendations, let me know if you need more :D

And....have a great trip!

Maybe skip Beauty Queens for a plane ride (but definitely read it when you're home if you haven't yet!). I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone on a trip last fall and loved it - it's great vacation reading. I love YA contemporaries: In Honor by Jessi Kirby is wonderful. Summer road trip with lots of reflection.

Before my flight I'm going to see what Kindle books my library has... I recently read City of Ember and loved it.

Ha, good point about skipping BEAUTY QUEENS!I don't need to reread that one on a plane, as much as I love it.

Thanks for all of the recommendations!

I hate flying too so I totally understand. I'm flying once this summer so these comments are helping me too! Looks like you already have some great rec's above. I hope you have an awesome trip!

I don't have any recommendations--I seem to be choosing bad book after bad book lately--but I wanted to wish you Happy Flights!
