Putter Time

Are you giving yourself enough time to putter?

"Puttering (or pottering or putzing, depending on your tribe) is an activity, if it can be properly called that, of desultory bliss. It’s a mental and physical wandering that helpfully repels any impulse to be genuinely productive." ("To Putter, Divine" from NY Mag)
Not to assign productive value to puttering (which would, by definition, make it not-puttering), but most of my SNIs and Great Revision Insights appear while I'm puttering around.
Or running, but that's a different story.

How do you putter?

Most of the time that I spend puttering around is usually because I'm avoiding working on something else. I don't end up enjoying the puttering because I'm too busy feeling guilty the entire time for not working on that other thing. I think maybe the problem is that I spend too much time puttering and not enough time doing. :)

I tend to putter around certain stores...or is that browsing? Sometimes I give myself permission to do this...which is relaxing. Other times it starts as needed shopping and turns into puttering/browsing...then I'm not so relaxed, esp when I look at my watch and see the time I wasted.

My puttering and my procrastinating have a tendency blend--it's hard to tell when it stops being a relaxing and healthy activity and has become real time wastage/laziness.

I love that we can call this a real activity. :) I've also gotten some great ideas when I've taken breaks to relax and recharge.

I get all of my clarity when I'm puttering, too. I just need more time to do it! I swear, my day is SO scheduled...I need to schedule in puttering time somehow.
